From the Principal's Desk

Hello Theuerkauf Families,

As we settle into our 3rd week of school and I walk through classrooms, I observe students ready to learn and settling into the daily routines of school. I would like to emphasize the value of your positive partnership in your child’s educational journey. I would like to encourage you to take a few minutes each day to ask your child about their day, encourage them to continue to read, and be a part of their reading experience by reading to or listening to them read. If you speak another language at home, it is even more valuable to have conversations with your child in your home language so they continue to have bilingual experiences. Many a times, when we ask our child(ren) about their day, we may not get a detailed response from our child. As a parent, I experience this on a regular basis so I tried rephrasing the questions I ask my son and experienced some success. I even got success asking students at school similar questions. Want to share those with you- Questions to replace “How was your day?”

  • What was the best part of your day? (the answer would most probably be recess or playtime or music/ art and that’s perfectly okay! These are fun things that students should enjoy for whole child development)

  • What did you do that was creative?

  • Who did you play with at recess/ lunch?

  • What rule was hard to follow?

  • What part of the day you wish you could change?

  • Name something nice you did for someone?

  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

If you have any such strategies that work for your child, please feel free to share with me so I can share with other families as well. We are all parents that could use ideas from each other and continue to strengthen our parent partnerships. Isn’t that what families do - help and support each other? Our Theuerkauf family is here for you and your child as we walk this path of your child’s educational journey.

Strengthening our students’ world together.

Upward and Beyond,

Ms. Swati Dagar

Principal- Theuerkauf Elementary

You are invited to volunteer with Project Cornerstone! The Project Cornerstone ABC Reader Program works to build a caring community at our school and help the students thrive by developing social, emotional and life skills. Caring adults (you!) share a children’s book and discussion and activity in the classroom each month. Contact our parent lead, Teresa Peters (teresa.baker@gmail.com), for more info. Our orientation training is Thursday, Sept 5, 8:40am in Room 21. Our first book training is Friday, Sept 13.

Chess Club

The Chess Club welcomes beginning and experienced players alike, to play chess and learn.  At the Theuerkauf Chess Club, kids learn how to consider their options carefully and how their opponent might respond.  They also learn spatial relations and how to win and lose graciously. We meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the library at 7:45 am.  No prior knowledge of chess is required. We just ask for a positive attitude, a belief that one can learn and perseverance. There is no sign-up form or registration fee.

We are also looking for parents to help observe and guide the children.

CSMA- The Art of Food

Join us for a 12-week fall art club session where we will explore the theme of: The Art of Food. Students will paint, draw and build with support and instruction from CSMA faculty. Teachers develop a new curriculum with each new session. This session we will explore the many ways that food is connected to art.We will look at artists that use food as a medium or theme in their artwork and create projects based on these.

District News

MVEF News

As the our schools wrap up their Back to School Nights, the Mountain View Educational Foundation (MVEF) hopes parents learned more about what school foundations add to their child's education.  Neighboring cities, like Palo Alto and Los Altos, also rely on educational foundations to bring essential programs to their school districts. Here in Mountain View, that includes hands-on science, field trips, standards-based art and music lessons from Community School of Music and Arts, middle school athletics and more. A key to our district’s success is a vibrant PTA, a strong educational foundation and engaged parents like you!  The colorful brochure you received at back to school night doubles as a donation envelope- making donating easy! Or you can donate online at mvef.org. Over 70% of our funding comes from parents like you!

CAASPP student score reports are in!

If your child is currently in grade 4-8, you may access your child's English Language Arts and mathematics scores through PowerSchool (https://ps.mvwsd.org/public/). After logging in, click on "score reports" in the left hand column. If you are unable to access the Parent Portal, please contact your school secretary for assistance.

MV Parent U: Like movie and discussion

Mountain View Parent University presents a discussion and showing of “Like,” a documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care… but is that what's really happening? How can parents and students gain the skills to self-regulate?

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 PM at Crittenden Middle School Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

After the film, there will be a discussion facilitated by Common Sense Media and MVWSD staff. Spanish translation will be available during the discussion panel, and the film will have Spanish subtitles. Child care will be provided. To RSVP prior to the event, and to view live streaming on the internet during the event: mvwsd.org/parentu.
