Change to 5th grade Music Progress Reports:

The fifth-grade music program introduces students to playing an instrument, giving them a good musical foundation, developing proper technique, and fostering a life-long love of music making.  In order to increase the focus on these objectives, CSMA will discontinue individual testing and the 2nd and 3rd trimester detailed progress reports created for each music student. Instead, students will continue to be evaluated in class without the pressure of playing tests in so many different areas to determine their grades. They will receive and N or S grade and teacher comments, similar to the grading that takes place in the art program. These evaluations will also be used in part to determine the students invited to participate in the Summer Honor Program.

The main ways you can help your student succeed in band or strings is to ensure he/she brings his/her instrument and supplies to music class each week and practice at home regularly.  We look forward to sharing their musical progress with you at the spring Gala concerts at CSMA. Concert details will be provided soon!

Project Cornerstone

This month’s Project Cornerstone book tells the powerful true story of Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1960. Despite the screaming segregationist crowd outside and the lack of peers inside, Ruby spent first grade learning

and playing with one supportive teacher.

For our children, racial tensions and struggles to achieve civil rights may sound like ancient history. However, research in today’s schools shows that over the course of a year, nearly one-fourth of students across grades report that they have been harassed or bullied on school property because of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or disability. Intolerance and injustice are still painful obstacles our society strives to overcome.

The stories of extraordinary children in history can inspire children today to make a positive difference in the world. Ruby did not realize the importance of her role in advancing civil rights until she was about 18. This is an awesome reminder that our everyday acts are important. How can you and your child be an Upstander today?

Become a Living Classroom Docent!

Mountain View Whisman School District’s Living Classroom program inspires our students to value the natural world through garden-based education. We provide Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms with hour-long lessons that correlate with current science, math, and social studies standards. Living Classroom uses a hands-on, inquiry approach to learning which ensures our lessons are effective AND fun!

This year we will teach over 500 lessons with the help of our volunteers. Becoming a docent is rewarding, enjoyable, and no prior teaching experience is required. Interested in sharing your love of nature and outdoor learning with students? We would love to have you on board! Want to learn more?
