Parent Engagement Presentation Topic: Reclassification

and how to help your child graduate to become English proficient.

Cool Cat Assemblies - New Date

Starting this month, Cool Cat Assemblies will now be held on Thursdays.  Our next Cool Cat Assembly for the month of January

will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 8:35am.

 

The Science of Art! After School Art Club

Join us for a 16 week spring art club session where we will explore The Science of Art! Students will paint, draw and sculpt with support and instruction from

CSMA faculty. Lessons are inspired by techniques and styles of contemporary artists that approach art in ways that scientists do. See attachment for more information.

 

Mexican Folk Dance classes are back!

Registration is now open for Mexican Folk Dance classes taught by Maria Ornales. See the registration form attached, or check your child’s backpack.

Please make sure you or your child turns the form into the front office. Registration will be via lottery, and confirmed by 1/30. Classes will begin on

Thursday 2/1/18 from 2-3pm in the MUR.

***Please note- Maria is also offering an Advanced group open only to students that participated last year. This class will also start 2/1/18 but occur from 3-3:30pm in

the MUR.

 

STEAM Club for Kindergarten-2nd Grade Students

Thursdays at 12:50-1:50 pm February 8 - April 5 (8 sessions)

Have fun doing science experiments after school! This 8 week program, taught by Dr. Emily Chang, will cover fun hands-on topics from chemistry, biology,

physics, astronomy and art. Grab lunch and then meet us at 12:50 to make slime, play with robots, paint a fluid painting, and build a rocket!

Project Cornerstone Lesson

This month our Project Cornerstone book is When Sophie Feels Angry by Molly Bang.    Our focus in our lesson is to help students identify different emotions,

acknowledge the feelings that surround those emotions, and discuss ways to recover or be the conductor of their own emotions.  Although the book focuses on

anger, we can acknowledge that anger often surfaces in response to other emotions.  We want our students to discover that emotions are ever changing and they are

different for different people; In addition, the things that help us feel better, can also be different. Students will work to create a tool kit of ideas to help with their

emotions, but we as adults, can help them too!

What You Can Do At Home (Notes from our  Cornerstone Team):

Developing Emotional Intelligence in our children is extremely important. Dr. Gottman is one of the leading professionals and researchers in this area.  

Here are his steps to being an emotion coaching vs. emotion dismissing parent:

  • Step 1: Be aware of your child’s emotions.

Parents who emotion coach are aware of their own feelings and sensitive to the emotions present in their children. They do not require their child to amp

up their emotional expression for the feelings to be acknowledged.

 

  • Step 2: See emotions as an opportunity for connection and teaching.

Children’s emotions are not an inconvenience or a challenge. They are an opportunity to connect with your child and coach them through a challenging feeling.

 

  • Step 3: Listen and validate the feelings.

Give your child your full attention while you listen to their emotional expression. Describe what you see, reflect back what you hear, thus telling your

child you understand what they’re seeing and experiencing.

 

  • Step 4: Label their emotions.

After you have fully listened, help your child develop an awareness of and vocabulary for their emotional expression.

 

  • Step 5: Help your child problem-solve with limits.

All emotions are acceptable but all behaviors are not. Help your child cope with his or her emotions by developing problem-solving skills.

Limit the expression to appropriate behaviors. This involves helping your child set goals and generating solutions to reach those goals.

  • Discuss with your child how you deal with certain emotions

  • Brainstorm ways your child thinks you can support them when they are mad, sad, angry, etc.

  • Model making mistakes.  As Gottman says, you sometimes “flip your lid” or lose control. That’s normal. If you do, draw attention to your mistake and use a genuine apology. We are great role models in mistake making. Offer redos.  

 

  • If your child (or you) talks to one another with big emotion or in a negative tone, teach your child to take a breath and ask them for a redo--a chance to try again.

Graham’s Incoming 6th Grade Information Night

January 24th

6:00 – 8:00 p.m.   

We invite you all to come and join us at this fun and informative event. It is an opportunity for you and your student to learn about middle school life here at Graham.

If your last name begins with A-K, please start in our Multi-Purpose room (at the back of the school).

You will have the opportunities to hear from our principals some basic Information about courses, tips on how to be successful at middle school and ask questions

from our 6th grade student panel. If your last name begins with L-Z, please start in our Auditorium (at the front of the school). You will have the opportunity to

hear students from all our amazing musical groups perform. You will also hear from our Athletic Director about our after-school sports program. We will have

teachers that teachers some of the other elective talk about their courses, like STEM, Robotics, GMS TV and more. At 6:45 we will rotate the groups so everyone

can see both presentations. We are looking forward to showcasing our wonderful school and meeting all of you.

 

Crittenden 5th Grade Parent Night

Hello 5th grade families!  Please join us on January 25 at 6:00 PM in the Crittenden auditorium to learn more about our school and what to expect in 6th grade.  

This event is for parents, though students are welcome.  We will host events for students in the spring.

 

Bond Oversight, Parcel Tax Oversight committees seek community representatives

The District is seeking qualified persons to serve on two committees of community leaders:

• Bond Oversight Committee for the District's Measure G Bond Program (a member of a bona fide tax organization for a two-year commitment)

• Parcel Tax Oversight Committee for Measure B

Representatives monitor, provide oversight and ensure accountability to the funds received by the District, including an annual report to the Board regarding

CELDT/ELPAC Testers

JOB DESCRIPTION: The MVWSD is looking for qualified individuals interested in administering the English Language Proficiency Assessments for

California Test (ELPAC) to the District’s K-8 English language learners.  Flexible hours. $20 an hour. All examiners will be certified by successfully
