It is hard to believe that it is the third week of school already! As I walk through classrooms, I observe students ready to learn and settling into the daily routines. You play a vital role in your child’s success at school. I would like to encourage all of you to take a few minutes each day to ask your child about their day, encouraging them to continue to read and being a part of their reading experience by reading to or reading with your child every night. At school the core value we are focusing on for the month of September is - Respect. We had a Cool Cat Assembly last week to discuss what Respect looks like, feels like, and how students can exemplify Respect throughout the school day and beyond by using kind words, by following directions, by helping others around them, and by being a friend to their peers. Please continue to encourage these values at home. Thank you for all your support.

Together in education,
Ms. Swati Dagar - Principal

Attendance

My student is in school most of the time, so that’s ok, right?

Most parents are aware of what it means for a child to be truant from school. However, there is a new push through the state of California to reduce the numbers of students who are “chronically absent.” Students who are chronic absent typically attend school fairly regularly, but miss a few days here and there, which really add up and affect their learning. It's important to know both excused or unexcused absences count toward chronic absenteeism.

Chronically absent students have been absent (either excused or unexcused) for 10% of the time that school has been in session. For example, if your student has been absent 2 days before Sept. 15, he is chronically absent.  If your student has been absent 5 days before Oct. 20, she is chronically absent. An average of 2 days absent a month means a student is chronically absent. The District is now required to track this data and report it to the state.   For more information, click here.

Traffic Tips

Please do not leave your car unattended at the curb in the front of the school parking lot.  Also, a friendly reminder that the back parking lot is for staff parking. This area is not designed for student pick up and drop off.  Please park your vehicle in the front lot or nearby street. We appreciate your support and help with traffic safety for our children and families.

Show Your Theuerkauf Cheetah Pride Each Friday!!

Each Friday we are showing our Theuerkauf pride by wearing our cheetah t-shirt or other gear. If you showed so much pride last year that your Cheetah gear got worn out or you are new to our school, pick up the Cheetah gear form from the office. See you in Cheetah blue on Fridays!!

ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee)

Are you new to Theuerkauf Elementary? Is your child an English Language Learner? Want to meet other parents that are part of a committee supporting diverse students to become reclassified as English proficient? ELAC is looking for new members this year, and we hope you’ll join the group! Our next meeting is 9/6/18 at 8:40am in Rm 25. See you there!

Monday, September 17- CSA Mobile food distribution 2:00-4:00pm

CSA Food Distribution

Don’t forget Theuerkauf receives generous food donations for families twice a month by the bus parking area on San Luis Ave. CSA distributes food items according to your needs (pantry style). Come pick up fresh produce, canned goods, frozen items, and more! Please bring your own grocery bags.

Be part of Project Cornerstone at Theuerkauf!

Project Cornerstone is a program that supports social and emotional learning in our school. Adult volunteers read a specially selected book and lead a related discussion and activity once a month in one of our classrooms. This is a special opportunity for parents to create positive connections with students. Books, training and support are provided. We are looking for readers in both English and Spanish, for all grades. Please contact Teresa Peters (Teresa.baker@gmail.com) if you are interested in joining our team or have questions. (You can also come chat during the Community Program time at Back-to-School night.)

Chess Club

Do you want your child to learn to plan better? At the Theuerkauf Chess Club, kids learn how to consider their best option carefully and how their opponent might respond.  They also learn how to reason in space and how to win and lose graciously. Chess Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays in the library from 7:45 until the first bell rings. No prior knowledge of chess is required, just perseverance and a belief that one can learn.  There is no sign-up form or registration fee.

Mark Your Calendars: Family Game Night is happening on Saturday, September 15th.

Are you a game enthusiast? Are you neutral on games but always ready to help our Cheetahs have a great time? Well, either way please email theuerkaufpta@gmail.com to help us plan, set up, and run this fun and free event. We want your ideas and your elbow grease!

MVEF news and Hobee's Give Back Day Sept. 8

As the schools wrap up their Back to School Nights, the Mountain View Educational Foundation, (MVEF) hopes parents learned more about what school foundations add to their children's educations.  Neighboring cities, like Palo Alto and Los Altos, also rely on educational foundations to bring essential programs to their school districts. Here in Mountain View that includes hands-on science, field trips, standards-based art and music lessons from Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA), middle school athletics and more. A key to our district’s success is a vibrant PTA, a strong educational foundation and engaged parents like you!  The colorful brochure you received at back to school night doubles as a donation envelope- making donating easy! Or you can donate online at mvef.org. Over 70% of our funding comes from parents like you!

Spend your Saturday with your family, eating out and giving back to your schools! If are looking for an excuse to eat some of Hobee’s famous coffee cake, head to Hobee’s on Saturday the 8th. Hobee’s Mountain View will be donating 20% of your bill back to MVEF – just mention MVEF or show them the attached flyer!
