June 1, 2021

Happy last week of school, Cheetahs!

What a year this has been! I am unbelievably proud of each and every parent, student, and staff member for the grit and determination shown in the face of tremendous adversity. I know that we all look forward to a refreshing and restorative summer, and to moving into the next phase toward 'normalcy' in the coming school year. We know that our students made significant growth this year, even in the midst of the pandemic and countless hours on Zoom. Even so, there is still much work to be done to ensure that each student reaches their full potential in preparation for the next grade level. Please encourage your child to work 30 minutes each day on reading and 30 minutes each day on math through our online and print resources shared. See 'School News' below for details. As always, thank you for your partnership. I am so honored to have been able to walk alongside you through this very adventurous year, and I look forward to the great things we will accomplish together in 2021-2022. I hope to see everyone at our final Cool Cats award ceremony and talent show on Thursday! Please see the Important Dates section for links and times.

Together, we make a difference!

Yours in service,

Michelle Williams

End of Year Updates & News

  • Last Day of School and Report Cards: The last day of school will be Friday, June 4, 2021. It is a minimum day, and students will be dismissed at 11:55am. You will be receiving report cards electronically, by 4PM on June 4.

  • 2021-2022 School Year: We are beginning to plan our classes for next year.  If you are not returning to Theuerkauf for 2021-22 school year, please let us know as soon as possible by calling 650-903-6925 or email Mrs. Colon at [email protected].

  • District Wireless Hotspots and Chromebook: If you have a district-issued wireless hotspot or Chromebook and your student will not be returning to MVWSD next school year, OR if he/she no longer needs the hotspot, please return it to the Theuerkauf office by Friday, June 11, 2021 at 3pm.

  • MVWSD Summer is here! Every family's summer plans are different, but our district recommends that all students do some academic practice daily to keep their skills sharp in preparation for next year. MVWSD Summer is a collection of programs to help students maintain their academic skills, keep them connected to learning technology, and access free meals all summer long. These self- and parent-directed programs keep students in a routine during the summer and will go a long way to preventing learning loss. On i-Ready this summer, students will have both personalized lessons that their teachers have chosen for them, and lessons tailored to their needs based on assessment data. Look for an email soon from MVWSD or click on https://www.mvwsd.org/summer to learn more. Attached are flyers outlining students’ steps for a productive summer and for easy access to all of the programs’ links. (Flyer 1 - Summer Learning Menu & Flyer 2 - iReady Cheat Sheet)

  • i-Ready Summer Challenge: If you haven’t heard by now, over the summer I have issued a Cheetah Learning Challenge in order to motivate our students to continue learning over the summer. Though our students have shown growth even in the midst of this very difficult year, many of our students are not yet ready for the next grade level. To help them prepare, students are being assigned lessons at their own reading and math levels in i-Ready to complete, and they will also receive a hands-on workbook that they can use to catch up on their skills in math and English. For all students, including our current fifth graders, we will celebrate their hard work during our first week back at school in August:

  • If a student completes at least 50 iReady lessons (one lesson each weekday!) and both of their entire workbooks, they will have their names entered into a raffle. Three students will win gift cards to Barnes & Noble and also receive the rewards below.

  • If a student completes 40 iReady lessons and at least 3/4 of each workbook, they will get to participate in a cupcake party and also receive the prizes below.

  • If a student completes 30 iReady lessons and one full workbook overall, they will receive a bookmark and a bracelet.

  • Please encourage your child to participate in our summer challenge!

Library Corner

Hello Cheetahs!

Last week we celebrated all the winners of the Reading Extravaganza! Congratulations to the winners and all who participated.

It’s the last week of school, so please return all library books and classroom novels to Theuerkauf or any school in MVWSD. No fines will be collected on late books, so just get them turned in without worry. Thank you!

Summer reading rocks! Keep reading this summer, Cheetahs! The Mountain View City Library is expanding its hours and will be open 12-6 PM Monday through Saturday beginning June 1st. Getting a library card is FREE and easy! All you need is an adult with a photo ID that shows a current address. Library computers are again open to the public for free with an appointment. Reserve a packet at Grab and Go to follow your own outdoor adventure and solve “The Case of the Missing Rat.” Click here to see all the services and programs MV City Library is offering this summer.

Highlighted Book: It’s our last week of school and we will soon begin our summer vacation. Here’s a fun book about summer to see us off. And Then Comes Summer is written by Tom Brenner and illustrated by Jaime Kim. It is a short, but sweet story about some of our favorite summer activities. Here is a nice video of the book being read aloud. Enjoy!

You can access ebooks ALL SUMMER LONG by going to our library home page.

Have a fun and safe summer! Happy reading!--Mrs. B.

Next year: what school will look like

Wondering what school will look like in the fall? While we can't predict with certainty, here are the conditions that we anticipate will be in place in August 2021: English (http://mvw.sd/hVTcH) and Spanish (http://mvw.sd/NXd0a). MVWSD will communicate with families over the summer as we receive more guidance from public health officials.

Internet Service financial support available

Is your child approved to receive free or reduced-price school breakfast or lunch? If so, your household may qualify for the Emergency Broadband Benefit.

The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program (EBB Program) is a temporary federal program that launched on May 12, 2021 to help eligible households pay for internet service during the pandemic. For students whose families are struggling to afford their monthly internet service, this program may be able to help. Visit GetEmergencyBroadband.orgfor more information.

CalFresh Program for grocery assistance

Need help buying groceries? You might qualify for CalFresh, a free EBT card you can use to buy food at most stores and select online retailers. If you receive CalFresh benefits, you may also be eligible for P-EBT, a grocery benefit that provides $375 per child 18 and under over the summer months. To find out if you qualify, call 1-800-984-3663, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or scan the QR code (flyer attached) to request a call.
