From the Principal's Desk

Hello, Theuerkauf Families!

This week marks the beginning of state CAASPP testing for our students in grades 3 through 5. I am so proud of how focused and diligently our Cheetahs have been working. As you know, we will be testing during the morning hours for the next few weeks. I want to thank all of our upper grade parents for supporting students in getting a good night's sleep, getting to school on time, and supporting your students to persevere, not stress, to do their personal best each day. Thanks also to our  teachers and students from 'buddy classes' from the lower grades for sending lots of positive messages and reminders to our students who are testing. They are feeling the love!

On Tuesday, we were graced with four amazing musical performances, led by our talented CSMA music teacher, Ms. Sylvia Yuan. Students in grades 1-4 showcased beautiful singing, creative dancing, and recorder songs from around the world, and they had fun in the process! Thanks to all of the families who were able to come out and support the students. A special thanks goes to Ms. Yuan for her creativity, care, and leadership. Thank you for bringing joy to us all!

Finally, I look forward to seeing you all this Friday for our Dia del Niño activities out on the blacktop and fields. There will be ALL kinds of fun games, music, performances, dancing, and most importantly–lots of yummy food! We hope to see everyone there.

Thank you for your partnership. Together, we make a difference!

Sincerely,

Michelle Williams, Principal

SSC Nominations for 2023-24

It's that time again! We are now taking nominations for our 2023-24 School Site Council (SSC). The time commitment is about an hour monthly, with a bit of extra reading in the fall as we approve our school site plan. Serving as a member of the SSC provides you with the opportunity to provide input into how certain funds are allocated and to get involved in making sure Theuerkauf remains an amazing place for kids to go to school. Please read more and nominate yourself or others using this form

Chess Club: Starting today!!!

Back by popular demand, our Theuerkauf Chess Club has been brought back for any of our 1st-5th grade students who would like to learn, improve their strategies, or just have a little fun. The club will meet each Thursday after lunch from 12:30-1:15pm in room 8. Please stop by. You can RSVP by emailing [email protected]. We hope to see you there, Cheetahs

Library Corner

Theuerkauf library will close on May 19, 2023 to allow for end-of-year processes. Please help your student find all of their library books and return them in a timely manner. If books have been lost or damaged, please contact Mrs. Baikie at [email protected] or stop by the library.

  • Options to replace lost/damaged books are:

(1) Replace the book. The book can be used–it does not have to be new.

(2) Replace the book with another title. Books from Little Free Libraries that are in good condition are a great way to replace one title with a different title.

(3) Work with Mrs. Baikie to find a solution.

  • Book Fair Success: Thank you to Gretchen Hinderer Williams for organizing our Book Fair and to all volunteers who helped. It was a successful re-launch of book fairs for Theuerkauf Elementary and we raised over $4000 for books for the library and classrooms.

  • The Mountain View Public Library has their Summer Reading webpage up for students to register. There is a Summer Reading Kick-off Concert on June 3, 2023 from 2:00-4:00 pm. Stop into the Mountain View Public Library to learn more about the programs offered for families and sign up for a free library card. You can get Free & Discounted Museum Passes, California State Parks Passes, and more. The services at our Mountain View Public Library are excellent–there’s even a Seed Library!

Health and Wellness Parenting tip: Autism Awareness Month

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, we must understand and bond with our children to maintain a close connection. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that starts early in life. It affects social communication and interaction and is accompanied by repeating and narrow patterns of behavior or interests. As parents, we are a part of our child’s treatment.

To learn more parenting tips, click here

Here are some ASD signs to look for:

  1. Mobility. Examples of mobility can include but are not limited to, using only a few gestures (waving, clapping, pointing), unusual ways of moving the hands, fingers, or whole body, and rituals such as repeating things over and over or lining up objects

  2. Sensory Sensitivity. Sensory sensitivity includes, but is not limited to, delayed speech, not responding when someone calls their name, being very focused or attached to unusual objects, and unique sensory interests

  3. Interpersonal difficulties. Interpersonal difficulties can include avoiding eye contact, not sharing enjoyment or interests with others, little to no imitating others or pretending, forming friendships, and not knowing how to act in different social situations

No two people with ASD have the same signs and symptoms. Many things, such as language delays, thinking and learning problems, and behavioral challenges, can play a role. For this reason, autism is described as a "spectrum."

These tips came directly from the free online website of Nemours Children’s Health, reviewed by Dr.Treadwell-Deering, MD.
