 Principal's Message

Registration now open for the Arts Wheel Rotation 3 - The Last Rotation of the Year!

Arts Wheel is a free, after school class for students in grades K-5. The third rotation of the year will take place from the week of March 25 to the week of May 11 (7 weeks total). The arts focus topic is crafts with teacher Shivika Nayyarr.

Students enrolled in YMCA or Beyond the Bell (BTB) after school programs will automatically have the option to participate in the Arts Wheel through those programs - please do not register using the link below if your child is in YMCA or BTB.

If your child is not already participating in YMCA or BTB, you can register them for Arts Wheel using the link below. Registrations will close on March 8. Notifications to all families who are successfully enrolled or placed on the waitlist will go out by March 16.

Click here for Arts Wheel Rotation 3 registration. Keep reading for more details about Arts Wheel.

What is it?

The Arts Wheel is a new, free, weekly after school class for our students in grades K-5. We will have multiple fun themes over the course of the year such as Crafts, Digital Photography & Graphic Design, and Drawing and Comics.. The classes will be taught by local teaching artists.

Why is it called a “Wheel”?

Each after school class teacher will spend 8 weeks at a school before moving on to another school for the next “rotation”. This way, all participating schools will be able to experience the topic in which each teacher specializes.

How frequent are the classes, and how long is each class?

The once-per-week classes will be approximately 45 minutes long and take place over 8 weeks. Tentatively, for Rotation 3, our Arts Wheel teacher will be on campus on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Who is it for?

**If your child is already participating in after school YMCA or Beyond the Bell, they will automatically participate in the Arts Wheel through their after school program - no need to register!**

If your child is not in YMCA or BTB, you may register during the registration period using the link provided.

Wednesday Lunch Math Party!

I am excited to share that our instructional coach, Mrs. Garvey, school counselor, Mrs. Wilson, and I have started an optional Math Party program on Wednesdays during lunch for 3rd–5th graders! The goal of Math Party is to build math fluency skills in a fun, engaging way.

We began by learning new math card games each week to help students practice their facts while having fun. To help students see just how much they are growing, we recently added a one-minute timed fluency check at the beginning and end of each session. I am thrilled to share that every student improved, correctly completing at least one more problem by the end of the session than at the beginning. I love celebrating our cheetahs’ success!

Before break, all students who attended received flashcards to continue practicing at home. Please remind your child to bring those flashcards back each week. We also encourage you to practice with your child at home—it’s a great way to build confidence and fluency together!

In Partnership,

Principal Danielle Lyons

Join the District Equity Advisory Committee

Mountain View Whisman School District is relaunching the District Equity Advisory Committee (DEAC) and we want you at the table!

The DEAC is a member-driven group where parents and staff members provide meaningful input directly to the Superintendent on how MVWSD can grow into a more equitable and inclusive district for every student. This semester, the committee will focus on current equity work — including our Better Together initiatives — drawing on real data from counselors and social-emotional learning assessments.

This is your opportunity to help shape the direction of that work.

Meetings are virtual, once a month, just one hour:

  • Tuesday, March 31 | 6–7 PM

  • Tuesday, April 21 | 6–7 PM

  • Tuesday, May 19 | 6–7 PM (All meetings held via Zoom)

Whether you're new to this work or have been advocating for equity in our schools for years, we welcome your perspective. Together, we can build schools where every child belongs and thrives.

Interested? Click here to sign up! The application will close on March 17th.

If you’re curious, you’re welcome to reach out to learn more or shadow a role to see how you can contribute. Please contact Priya Liau. You can send a private message over Kontella or an email to [email protected]

Save the Date: Family Board Game Night Wednesday, March 18 in the MUR 4-6pm. Come join us for a family game night. All members of the family are welcome to come play games together in the MUR. You can bring your own games to share or use one of the many games supplied by the PTA.

The Scholastic Discovery Fair is coming March 26–30, with reasonably priced books, STEAM kits, and hands-on activities for students to explore. Families will have a chance to shop during the fair, and every purchase helps support our school. Look out for our volunteer sign-up list but in the meantime feel free to reach out to the PTA.

Have you worked in food service or just know your way around the kitchen? We’d love your help! We’re still looking for volunteers to cook at the March 28 Car Show + Pancake Breakfast + Sustainability Fair.
