Message from Principal Dagar

Dear Theuerkauf Families!

What a great start to our 2019-20 school year we’ve had! Our students are adjusting into their new classrooms and helping make friends feel right at home.  The first couple weeks are usually spent setting expectations and routines. We are excited to have you join us for the Back to School Night this evening so we can be partners in your child’s education as we kick off the school year.

It was so wonderful to see so many parents at the first Principal’s Coffee. We talked about our school focus, student goals, our new STEAM Lab, etc. I would like to extend a very special Thank you to all parents (and staff members) that have been volunteering to help us set up the STEAM lab. Below is a picture that reflects the true spirit of Theuerkauf – “Doing what it takes to make things happen!” We have had parents donate folders for STEAM lab, paint our dry erase tables, help set and organize the lab procedures. We will be inaugurating our STEAM lab very soon. Every student goes through Response to Instruction (RTI) – STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Lab twice a week for standards-based Science Instruction and science investigations. We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students.

This year we will also be providing our 3rd-4th-5th graders with computer science coding classes through TechSmart. All of our 3rd-5th grade teachers were trained in the summer to teach students programming language during the instructional day. As students engage in learning the programming language of Skylark, they will learn the quintessential skills of problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration with a team to produce an end-product. We want our students to understand the value of each member of the team is important and valuable in making the team successful. Isn’t that what college and career readiness is all about?!

We are a school that believes in parent empowerment and involving parents in decision making. Each classroom will have a room parent this year, who will help serve as a liaison between the classroom teacher and the other parents in the room working alongside our school PTA leadership to build our school community stronger and more cohesive. As your school principal, I look for parent involvement in decision making and for getting feedback in school functioning. Please help us with your gift of time and by being involved in parent leadership opportunities. We have parent leadership positions open for our School Site Council (SSC) and for our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). Please email me directly at [email protected] if you are interested. We will also be sending nominations out with our next newsletter.

Teachers, staff members, principal, and parent volunteers painted desks…students made catapults, played bottle cap letter games, had fun learning activities, and many more fun learning activities– pretty great start of the 2019-20 school year, I’d say! Like I say, learning is more meaningful when it is fun. Thank you for entrusting your children with us and for your positive partnership.

Upward and Beyond,

Ms. Swati Dagar
Principal

Chess Club

The Chess Club welcomes beginning and experienced players alike, to play chess and learn.  At the Theuerkauf Chess Club, kids learn how to consider their options carefully and how their opponent might respond.  They also learn spatial relations and how to win and lose graciously. We meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the library at 7:45 AM.  No prior knowledge of chess is required. We just ask for a positive attitude, a belief that one can learn and perseverance. There is no sign-up form or registration fee.

We are also looking for parents to help observe and guide the children.

Attendance

Why is it important that students are in school regularly? Research shows that school attendance is a strong indicator of success. It's about students learning what they need to know, belonging to the school community, and being part of the team that is preparing them with good habits for high school. For more information, click here.

Core Values at Theuerkauf

One way that Theuerkauf recognizes positive behavior is with Cool Cat Certificates. Cool Cat Certificates are awarded when a student exemplifies one of the four core values at Theuerkauf: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, and Courage. Students may receive one of these certificates any time a teacher notices one of these excellent behaviors. At the end of each month, two students from each class will be recognized out our Cool Cat Assembly.

CSMA- The Art of Food

Join us for a 12-week fall art club session where we will explore the theme of: The Art of Food. Students will paint, draw and build with support and instruction from CSMA faculty. Teachers develop a new curriculum with each new session. This session we will explore the many ways that food is connected to art. We will look at artists that use food as a medium or theme in their artwork and create projects based on these.
