 Principal's Message

Dear Cheetah Community,

My name is Margaret Poor, and I am so pleased to be joining the Theuerkauf community as your interim principal while Principal Lyons is out on maternity leave. I have been part of the MVWSD community in different ways since my now-22 year old son started Kindergarten at Landels Elementary. Both he and his little sister spent their K-8 years at MVWSD. I have been where you are now - in fact, if my children were elementary-aged now, they would be attending Theuerkauf Elementary! You may see me walking to school at Theuerkauf on some days.

In addition to being a part of the parent community, and a PTA and MVEF board member,  I have worked for the district in a variety of roles, including ELPAC Coordinator, Substitute Teacher, ELD and Newcomer Teacher, 5th Grade Teacher, STEAM Teacher, and most recently as Teacher on Special Assignment for ELD for the district. Again, I am thrilled to be joining you all at Theuerkauf in this new role.

I want to say that I am profoundly grateful for the welcome I have gotten from everyone at Theuerkauf, from teachers and staff to the students and parents that I have had the chance to meet so far. I look forward to getting to know everyone at Theuerkauf, and learning everything I can about it and its community. I feel so fortunate to be joining you. My special thanks goes to Principal Lyons who has been generous with her time, knowledge, and energy, getting me as up to speed as much as possible. We will all miss her, and we cannot wait to meet Baby Lyons!

This week! Interim ELPAC Testing for 3rd-5th graders - 1/15-1/17 during ELD

This year we have an exciting opportunity to get to know more about our English language learners before the summative ELPAC test which is administered between February and April. This week, English Learner students will get to experience the test environment for the listening, reading, and writing sections. Teachers will get immediate feedback on where each student is excelling and challenges they are still having. This will help to tailor instruction during our ELD rotations for the coming weeks so they can make even more improvement before the summative ELPAC! We look forward to using the data to support our students even more!

LA fires help, wildfire smoke procedures

Our hearts go out to all of the families, first responders and schools who are profoundly impacted by the devastating fires in Los Angeles. It’s hard to know how to help when there is so much need, but here is a list of ways our families could contribute. Our children also may be affected by the devastation they hear about in LA. Here are tips for parents from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network about talking to children when scary things happen.

If the smoke does drift into our area, MVWSD will enact its plans to keep students and staff safe. Please see https://www.mvwsd.org/airquality for how we track air quality, what instrument we use and why, and what happens when the air is bad.
