From the Principal's Desk

Hello wonderful Theuerkauf Families!

We are making great strides with student achievement thus far and want to keep this momentum going. Our staff counts on you - our parents - to partner with us as we work together for student success. Your child being at school each day makes a great impact on their educational success and learning. There has been so much research around absenteeism in school impacting a child’s learning. An estimated 5 to 7.5 million students in the United States miss almost a month of school every year. This adds up to over a year missed by the time of graduation. Research shows students who miss 10 percent of school, or two days per month, show negative academic progress. In some cases, that adds up to 18 days a school year and is considered to be chronic absence. Poor attendance can keep children from reading proficiently by the end of third grade, which is shown to negatively affect their chances of graduating on time.

Every Minute Matters

If a student is 10 minutes late to school each day, even this adds up to missing many hours of class time cumulatively. A student with a 90 percent attendance average for Kindergarten through 12th grade will miss over a year of accumulated time in the classroom.

Please see the following tips for maximizing your child’s opportunity to achieve at high levels and ways to keep your scholar in class.

1.    Establish a reasonable bedtime that allows for 8 hours of sleep.

2.    Establish a back up plan for getting your child to school in case something comes up.

3.    Only keep your child at home if they are sick (fever, vomiting, or a contagious illness).

4.    Schedule doctor appointments during school breaks, or before/ after regular school hours when necessary.

5.    Plan family vacations around holidays or other times off from school so that your child will not miss any learning.

We have a school wide goal of attaining 97% percent attendance throughout the year. Each month as a part of positive recognition for attendance, the class with the highest attendance rate for the month is recognized and they get a Lunch - Pizza party with me. Two classes won the attendance incentive for November/December - Ms. Casey’s 3rd graders and Ms. Johnston's 2nd graders. The school wide attendance for November was 94.28% and for December it was 93.29%. Our school wide attendance goal is 97%. Showing up on time counts and matters. We can do this! Thank you for your partnership in this matter.

Well, I’ve been thinking, it's too long since the last “Bedtime Story with Principal Dagar”. So, let's have one this Friday, January 17th, at 7:30 pm. See you on Facebook Live with a super fun story to end our week!

i-Ready Diagnostic #2 Assessment Access:

i-Ready is an online program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth in mathematics and reading. We use i-Ready for grades Kindergarten - 5th grade at our school. The week of Jan. 13, parents may access the results from the i-Ready Diagnostic #2 that children took in December. Look for an email with specific directions about how to access the results through the PowerSchool Parent Portal (https://ps.mvwsd.org/public/).

There are four reports (two for math and two for English language arts); one report will show your student’s overall score and growth since August, and a detailed report will show how your student performed on each grade-level standards in math and language arts. You can review this information and talk with your teacher about how to support and enrich your child’s learning.

Your child can access i-Ready instruction at home online anytime through Clever to supplement, reinforce and enrich his/her classroom learning. These lessons supplement core instruction, and support and enrich students' learning. They are tailored to students, based on information from their i-Ready assessments. Please ask your child’s teacher if you have trouble accessing i-Ready. Our students have shown tremendous growth school wide on the i-Ready assessment and I am so proud of all their hard work. As I say, “Keep rocking, Cheetahs!”

Upward and Beyond!

Sincerely,

Ms. Swati Dagar
