Before the School Year Begins

Q. How do I register my child for Theuerkauf?

A. Please visit the Mountain View Whisman School District's registration website for enrollment information. Students must be five years old by September 1 to be eligible for kindergarten in August of that school year.

Q. How will I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?

A. Students must be five years old by September 1 to be eligible for kindergarten in August of that school year.

Preparing for your child’s transition into kindergarten can be confusing, especially if you’re not quite sure where to begin. We’re here to help make sure that you have all of the information that you need. Please see  http://mvw.sd/ImReady for a checklist and information on Kinder readiness

Q. Is there a Kindergarten Info Night? How about a tour of the kinder classrooms?

A.The Mountain View Whisman School District usually schedules a district-wide school-based kinder info nights in January.  These events are intended for adults only. If you wish to tour the classrooms with your incoming kindergartner, we invite you to attend our annual Open House evening, which is held every year in late March.

Q. My child is not scheduled to receive his regular vaccines until after my in-person registration appointment at the district office. Do I really need to get them done before I go?

A. Yes, you will need to show paperwork certifying that you have completed all required immunization when you go to the district office, including a tuberculosis (PPD) test performed within 12 months of your appointment (not before "school entry"). You will not be able to complete the registration process until you complete this step.

Q. When will I find out which class my child is in?

A. Class assignments will be posted on PowerSchool the Monday before school starts.

The PTA often hosts meet ups and playdates before school starts, including an opportunity to purchase Theuerkauf shirts and other gear. It is fun for the kids to have their t-shirts at the beginning of school and they are encouraged to wear them every Friday for Spirit Day. You will also be able to learn about the PTA (Parent Teacher Association), rewards programs, Walkathon, and other important programs at school.

Q. Will new kinder families get to meet the teachers and other students before school starts?

A. Yes, there is usually a Kindergarten social on the Friday before school starts for all kindergartners and their families. It will be in the early afternoon, outside the kindergarten classrooms.

A. Absolutely! Sign up in your child's classroom on Back-to-School Night, which usually takes place on a weeknight in August.

Q. How can I help if I can't do so during the day?

A. There are several ways to help, even if you can't be there during school hours. Many teachers have jobs for parents at home. They will ask for volunteers for these jobs at Back-to-School night. If you don't see these jobs on a Sign-up Sheet at Back-to-School night, let your teacher know that you're willing to help from home and he/she will contact you when a need arises.

Q. What is Spirit Day?

A. Every Friday is Theuerkauf Spirit Day, on which we encourage all students to wear Theuerkauf t-shirts to show their school spirit. You may purchase Theuerkauf gear from the PTA by filling out the order form which you can find in the front office. Give the form, along with your payment, to your student's teacher or to Mary or Sherri in the front office.

Q. What is Friday Assembly?

A. On the last Friday morning of the month, the entire school meets on the playground blacktop. This is your chance to hear the latest news directly from the principal, staff, and students, and learn about school updates, Cool Cat Awards, contest winners, etc. If the Friday is a holiday the assembly meets on the Thursday.
