From the Principal's Desk

Dear Theuerkauf Families,

It has been a busy week here at our school. Students in grades 1st - 5th just took their diagnostic assessments in English Language Arts and Math on the i-Ready platform. Parents should be getting the reports in the next few days. This report is the beginning of the year benchmark for students. We use this information to design Response to Instruction (RTi) groups for Reading, Math, and Writing support School wide, we are focusing on using higher order thinking skills through purposeful questioning, vocabulary instruction, and have a focus on academic language instruction. Each classroom has Language and Content objectives posted for the lesson each day which are not only stated but referenced through the lesson to provide students with a purpose for their learning for the day.

Catch a glimpse into the classroom objectives:

STEAM Lab Observations and Wonderings

As we build a culture of kindness and giving back in our students, we are requesting support for some of our student lunches to be sponsored. In our school's front office, we have a jar for parent donations that will go toward sponsoring lunches for students whose families may not be able to afford the costs. Every dollar counts and makes a difference towards student lunch costs. Any and all donations are appreciated. Your kind contributions could help with lunch or breakfast costs for one more student.

We believe that the foundation of a solid educational foundation is the school-home partnership revolving around student support and are so grateful for amazing families like yourself that support our school and our staff. Now, you know that Fridays are spirit wear days at our school. Who says only staff and students wear spirit gear?! We have parents that wear school shirts on Fridays to show Cheetah Spirit and we LOVE it!

Staff, students, and parents united at Theuerkauf!

Upward and Beyond!

Sincerely,

Ms. Swati Dagar

Project Cornerstone

Volunteers needed for Project Cornerstone in 1st and 4th grade classrooms! The Project Cornerstone ABC Reader Program works to build a caring community at our school and help the students thrive by developing social, emotional and life skills. Caring adults (you!) share a children’s book and discussion and activity in the classroom each month. This year's topics include: accepting-understanding-and-valuing diversity, choosing how you respond to a situation, identifying supportive adults, handling feelings, identifying your passions and more.

This role takes approximately 3 hours per month - 45 min training on the book, 1 hour of your own prep time and ~45 minutes in the classroom. Please email [email protected] to volunteer or for more information.

Attendance

When students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.  Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent. Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.  For more information, click here.

5th Grade Science Camp October 1st-4th

All 5th grade students need to report to their class for attendance. All luggage and sleeping bags can be left at the side gate to get loaded on to the bus. The bus will be leaving school at 9:00 a.m from school and they will be returning on Friday, October 4th around Noon. When the students return on Friday they are to be picked up from school.

Show Your Theuerkauf Cheetah Pride Each Friday!!

Each Friday we are showing our Theuerkauf pride by wearing our cheetah school t-shirt or other gear. If you showed so much pride last year that your Cheetah gear got worn out or you are new to our school. Print the order form out and turn it into the office and we will deliver it to your child’s class. See you in Cheetah blue on Friday! Cheetah gear order form attached.

Donations Towards Students’ Lunch Dues

At Theuerkauf, we are building a culture of kindness, compassion, and giving in our students. It starts by us adults being role models and helping others that may be in need. Starting next week, September 16th, there will be a donation box in the front office for any family would like to donate $$ toward lunch dues for students who may not be able to pay for hot lunch/ breakfast. Any and all donations are appreciated. Every dollar makes an impact and can help feed one more child. This is not a requirement but your generous donations towards feeding students at school are much appreciated. Thank you so much.

District News

News from the School Nurse

MVWSD will be bringing back Vision to Learn (VTL) to Theuerkauf this school year. VTL is a non-profit organization that provides free vision care to kids through the use of mobile vision clinics.

All students (grades TK through 5th grade) will have a vision screening performed by the district nurses on Tuesday, September 24th. If you do not want your child to participate, please contact the school nurse. All students who do not pass the vision screening will receive an eye exam by the VTL optometrist. If you do not want your child to participate in the VTL program, there will be an opt-out form available in the next few weeks that you can complete and return to the school office. We will notify you of the date that Vision to Learn will be coming to campus in the next few weeks.

Also, on the same day, the district nurses will be performing state mandated hearing screening for kindergarten, second, and fifth grades.

Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.

If you have additional questions, feel free to contact the school nurse at

650-526-3500, ext. 1053.

MV Parent U: Like movie and discussion

Mountain View Parent University presents a discussion and showing of “Like,” a documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care… but is that what's really happening? How can parents and students gain the skills to self-regulate?

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 p.m at Crittenden Middle School Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

After the film, there will be a discussion facilitated by Common Sense Media and MVWSD staff. Spanish translation will be available during the discussion panel, and the film will have Spanish subtitles. Child care will be provided. To RSVP prior to the event, and to view live streaming on the internet during the event: mvwsd.org/parentu.
