November 20, 2020

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Theuerkauf Families,

We have successfully completed the first trimester of the 2020-2021 school year!

November is the time of year when we reflect and think of those whom we are grateful for. Teachers, school staff and parents all have an important role in the success of all our students. MVWSD would like to show our gratitude to everyone for their dedication and commitment over the past several months.

On Tuesday, November 24th, MVWSD will have a district-wide staff/team building day.  To accommodate this, Tuesday, November 24th will be an asynchronous day for students. This means that, instead of live lessons, we’ll have a day that looks more like our typical Wednesdays. Students will still have live morning check-ins and will attend the live art, music, and PE classes that were previously scheduled. The rest of the day will feature fun learning activities that students can do at their own pace.

The intention is that this day of thankfulness is a little more fun and relaxed and starts off our Thanksgiving holiday well as all count our many blessings for health, family, friends, and all who support us in every way.

Thank you so much for supporting our teachers and staff.

Together, we make a difference!

Yours in service,

Michelle Williams

As a result, distribution for multiple, free grab and go meals for children during the break will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Parents may come on Tuesday, 11/24, from 11:30 am - 1 pm to pick up Tuesday's lunch as well as meals for Wednesday, Thursday (including turkey and fixings!), and Friday. Regular meal distribution will resume on Monday, Nov. 30.

Seeking Career Speakers

Do you love your career? Are you willing to share the story of how you got to this place in your life? If so, please consider serving as a speaker in our upcoming online Zoom assembly. We would love to have as many careers and occupations represented as possible. If you would be willing to speak to a small group of students in a breakout room during this assembly, please complete this quick form and we will be in touch with the logistics. Our kids will benefit greatly from hearing your story and from learning what it is like to do what you do, and they will benefit even further from hearing this from someone from our very own community.

Together We Are a Better MVWSD: November: We acknowledge our history

It's already November and the holiday season is upon us. Traditionally, elementary school students learn about a peaceful feast held in 1621 by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians, who helped teach them to survive in a perilous new world. To promote both critical thinking and the disruption of falsehoods favoring a colonialist-dominant narrative, we must engage with primary sources and counternarratives to grapple with the mythologies of the first Thanksgiving. This month, the BetterTogether calendar encourages all of us to acknowledge our shared history and its truths, starting with the contributions of those Indigenous to North America. To see more, click on the attached flyer (Spanish included) or visit https://www.mvwsd.org/bettertogetherMVWSD.

LAMV PTA Council and SELPA 1 CAC present Distance Learning Toolkit: Increasing Focus Through a Sensory Lens

Thursday December 3, 7-8:30 PM. A talk with Lisa Kaplan Shanaan, MS OTR/L TMHP

How do you stay engaged? How do you calm down when excited, or pep up when you are zoned out? You may know your own body and the tricks that work for you, but children are still working this out. It is especially difficult to learn self-regulation when involved in distance learning on screens for hours a day. Come learn from Lisa Kaplan Shaanan, an occupational therapist and trainer, who has been working with children birth thru 18 years old for more than 30 years. She will recommend tools and techniques useful to help all children discover their best ways to self-regulate and really learn and stay engaged during the Zoom school day.
